Gift Box Design for the Year of the Tiger

Combining Tradition and Fashion in a High-End Dim Sum Gift Box

Inspired by the Chinese Year of the Tiger, designer Jin Zhang creates a unique gift box that combines traditional Chinese culture with a young and fashionable twist. With its vibrant colors and interactive features, this gift box is set to bring joy and excitement to the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations.

2022 marks the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese lunar calendar, and it is customary to exchange gifts during this festive season. While most New Year's gifts adhere to traditional Chinese designs, Jin Zhang wanted to create something different - a high-end dim sum gift box that appeals to both traditional and modern sensibilities. The designer cleverly incorporates the Chinese idiom "wu hu lin men" (five blessings come to the door) by using five tigers to represent the blessings. This not only adds a symbolic meaning to the gift box but also creates a double New Year's greeting.

One of the standout features of this gift box is its bold color scheme. Jin Zhang boldly contrasts orange and green to make the entire package more fashionable and eye-catching. The use of these vibrant colors adds a youthful and energetic vibe to the traditional Chinese design, making it appealing to a wider audience.

The gift box and the inner box are made from ordinary cardboard, but the designer employs three-dimensional embossing to highlight the realistic tiger graphics. The box itself is designed to be a thin growing strip, with the lid embedded into the bottom box, resembling a framed painting. This unique design allows the box to be used as a decorative painting, adding a touch of elegance to any space. Additionally, the packaging is designed for secondary use, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

Measuring at 520*280*50mm, the gift box also contains a line drawing of a tiger that can be colored by the recipients. This interactive feature encourages people to come together and engage in a creative activity, fostering emotional interaction and strengthening relationships. The painted picture can be permanently retained as a hanging painting, serving as a lasting memory of the joyful celebrations.

Designed in November 2021, this gift box will be available for sale in Wuhan, China, in December 2021. It is a testament to the designer's meticulous research and creative problem-solving. Jin Zhang consulted various materials and discovered that different regions of China associate tigers with different meanings, such as peace, good luck, guardianship, happiness, and fortune. By incorporating these elements into the design, the gift box not only pays homage to tradition but also embraces contemporary fashion.

The design of this gift box presented a significant challenge - how to strike a balance between traditional Chinese culture and modern fashion. Jin Zhang successfully overcame this challenge by infusing vibrant colors and interactive features into the design, creating a unique and captivating gift box that appeals to people of all ages.

This innovative gift box design has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. The award acknowledges its well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities that meet professional and industrial requirements. By integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, this gift box design contributes to a better world, bringing fulfillment and positive feelings to its recipients.
